Congratulations to all who participated in the 42nd Anniversary A2A 2024 event! We are
forever grateful to everyone who volunteered, participated, and supported this year's
event from afar. We must extend a special thank you to our industry sponsors, and to
everyone who generously donated to our GoFundMe / fundraising campaign. Your financial
contributions made it possible for us to hold the Athens-to-Atlanta event one last time.
What a great time it was! We experienced quintessential A2A weather and had a fantastic
turnout. It was wonderful to reconnect with many A2A veterans as well as meet many
first-time participants. There are countless friendships, memories, and stories that
have come from the many decades of this event. Some of them are preserved here in
these results pages.
Once again we hosted all three of our familiar ultra-marathon events on Sunday as well as the
10K event on Saturday. For those who have skated with us in one or more prior year events, be sure
to check your DuraSkater Ranking. If you finished your registered
distance on October 20th, 2024, then you've likely moved up in the ranking!
Event Director, Anna Zuver, wishes to extend a special thank you to David Kaplan, who is
responsible for the creation and maintenance of this unique event results and rankings presentation.
We hope to keep this resource active for years to come.
Since we've just added the 2024 event results to these pages, there is a good
chance that we've made at least one mistake or two, or failed to connect a few 2024 results
to previous years. We match year-to-year results by skater's name and state (or country if
you live outside of the USA). This means that even if we have your name spelled correctly,
we may still have not properly matched up your results for participation in different years.
This can happen if you've moved, or if your name changed. So please don't be shy about letting
us know if we've not matched your results properly. Just send a message to
webmaster@a2a.net
and tell us what name(s) and/or state(s)/country(ies) we have all of your results listed
under and for which years, and we'll do the rest.
The Evolution of A2A - Event Types, Distances and Terminology
The first A2A event in 1982 was 84-miles long, over a series of roads that got skaters
from Athens to Atlanta. In these pages we refer to this event as the FULL
distance event. However, while the general route has remained unchanged, numerous
adjustments have been made over the years due to temporary construction, permanent
changes in roads, relocated start or finish lines, etc. Consequently, the distance of
the FULL event has varied from year-to-year between 84 and 87 miles.
In 1988 we added a shorter event using the first 42-miles of the full-distance course. We refer to
this as the HALF distance event. With course changes, the distance of
the HALF event has varied from year-to-year from as short as 38 to as long as 42 miles.
In the same year we also added a variation of the full-distance event with participants
skating to checkpoint #3 and then cycling to the finish line. We refer to this as the
Biathlon (BIAT) event. The Biathlon event ran for three years only
(1988-1990) with distances between 84 and 85 miles.
In 2007 we ran our first ten kilometer (10KM or 10K) event.
This event wasn't run again until 2019.
In 2003 we added a new event, starting near the half-distance finish line and with a distance of
52 miles. Since a common running marathon is 26 miles, in these pages we refer to this event
as the Double Marathon (DBLM) or Double event. Due to
course changes over the years, the distance of the DBLM event has varied from 48 to 52 miles.
In 2021 the COVID pandemic put a damper on almost everything. Under the difficult circumstances
we had to downsize... Consequently we ran just two events: A 49-mile DBLM event, and a new
but one-time-only 16-mile event.
In these pages we consider the FULL, HALF and DBLM events to be our UltraMarathon
events. These are the events included in our cumulative
DuraSkater and
Endurance rankings.
The 10KM, BIAT and 16-mile event results are also available here, but they are NOT
included in the cumulative rankings.
